The oldest domains on the internet: a census of 85,887 analyzed domains

Key findings

1. Popularity is an age gradient. The median top-1,000 domain was registered in 2005; the median 10k–100k domain in 2012 — a 7-year gap. 32.7% of the top 1,000 predates 2000 entirely, versus 17.9% of the mid-tail. Whatever else ranking rewards, longevity rides along.
2. The pioneers punch far above their weight. 4,402 analyzed domains were registered by the end of 1995. 17.7% of them sit in today's top 10,000 — in a corpus where only 10.3% of all domains do. An early registration is no guarantee of anything, but the early web that survived, survived near the top.
3. The old web is corporately guarded. Of the 14,810 pre-2000 registrations with a current registrar on record, 36.4% sit with just three: Network Solutions, LLC, CSC Corporate Domains, Inc., GoDaddy.com, LLC. Add MarkMonitor and the top four are 44.8% — the domains that built the web are now largely brand-protection assets.
4. Every TLD has its own 1985. Across the 50 TLDs with at least 100 dated domains in the corpus, the oldest names are almost all infrastructure, universities and research networks — nordu.net (January 1, 1985) before the first .com (symbolics.com, March 15, 1985), mitre.org for .org, cwi.nl for .nl. 5. Registries occasionally lie about their own age. 3 of 85,890 reported creation dates were implausible — epoch-zero timestamps rendering as 1970 and dates predating the DNS itself — and are excluded from every number here. WHOIS creation dates are registry claims, not audited history: a domain that expired and was re-registered reports its latest registration.
