MX records for Microsoft 365

MX records tell the world where mail for your domain gets delivered. These are Microsoft 365's records — publish them at your DNS provider (not at Microsoft 365).

The records

MX · Host @ · <your-token>.mail.protection.outlook.com · Priority 0The token is specific to your tenant/domain — copy the exact value from the admin center; never use an example.

⚠ Copy the exact value from: Microsoft 365 admin center → Settings → Domains → your domain → DNS records / Manage DNS.

Steps

  1. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, open Settings → Domains → your domain → DNS records, and copy the exact MX value shown.
  2. Add it at your DNS provider: host @, priority 0 (the highest available — lower number = higher priority), TTL 3600.
  3. Remove (or deprioritize, then remove) MX records pointing at your previous mail provider once mail flows through Exchange Online.

Gotchas

  • ⚠Add all users/mailboxes before flipping MX, or mail bounces.
  • ⚠Exchange Online only supports MX TTLs under 6 hours (21,600 seconds).
